Our Model
We know from our extensive research and experience that truly successful and effective teams who deliver value to organisations and businesses have seven key characteristics in common. This is shown in our Creating the Team Edge © framework below:
The seven characteristics in our Creating the Team Edge model make up the seven elements in our Team 360 Questionnaire.
Each characteristic is one of the key elements that high-performing business teams possess. They are described as:
A statement of why the team exists. The purpose statement captures the spirit of the team working together to uniquely contribute towards the goals of its own organisation, its stakeholders, and the wider system. The statement only has weight when accompanied by collective performance goals.
The team works on developing their unique identity together. Their identity binds them together and constantly reinforces the team’s positive mindset, energy and motivation. The team identity will be recognised and admired by both those inside and outside the team.
Values and beliefs in teams provide a sense of what is right and wrong. The team explores and agrees on the culture it desires and the values, standards and behaviours that will underpin the team’s efforts. Belief in the team’s purpose, identity and values are essential for the team to fully perform.

Teams develop their sense of unity and build mutual trust, support and understanding. Teams invest time in open and honest conversations to work more closely together and build stronger relationships within the wider organisation.
The team invests time in setting up the best systems and processes to enable its members to make confident and effective decisions. The team works on improving the structure of meetings and how it engages with others, in order to deliver concrete outcomes.
Teams explore ways to challenge their performance and look for opportunities to test their abilities. The team rigorously reviews its plans, applies innovative ways to think differently and ensure the team members are always improving, learning and supporting each others’ development.
The ‘Creating the Team Edge’ 360 has been developed by Performance Edge based on the seven characteristics to support teams understand their areas of strength, as well as areas to work on. Our web application is the first step on your team’s development journey, helping to analyse the team’s current performance, the value it currently offers to the business or organisation, and the views of everyone involved.
Our Book

Containing more than 40 tools which can be used in a virtual or in-person coaching environment, Building Top-Performing Teams is a practical guide for leaders, HR professionals, coaches, team coaches and anyone with management responsibility. It covers how to motivate, develop, engage and reward a team of employees with different levels of experience and priorities to achieve outstanding business success.
Building Top-Performing Teams includes essential guidance, tools and techniques that show how to promote team ways of working rather than individual-focused processes. It also includes guidance on managing internal team conflict and ensuring that teams are purpose-driven and working towards a shared business goal. Each chapter includes diagnostic questions and reflective practice exercises to allow readers to identify how to apply each element of team development to their workforce. Supported by the authors’ experience in organizations such as the BBC, John Lewis, KPMG, Britvic, the NHS and BMW, this is essential reading for anyone needing to unlock the value of teams to achieve greater business performance.
